Frankie
The egg roll is an incredible thing. My first experience was at Nizaam’s (the inventors of kathi rolls) in Calcutta when I was very young. I found the Bambaiya equivalent in the Frankie at a Tibbs stall close to school near Regal Cinema. In college, my go to was the Frankie stall, which I am told still exists, at Churchgate station close to the Fountain Pepsi stand.
Nowadays I get my Frankie fix wherever I can get it, at Shivaji Park or at Mumbai airport and one time a couple of years back also at Churchgate station. Am sure you can have the chicken or the mutton curry one or for the veggie lovers the masala aloo or paneer ones but my eternal favourite is the simple egg Frankie. Crisp maida parathas with plain egg omlette cooked with the paratha, stuffed with the wondrous combination of chopped onions, chaat masala and chopped chilies soaked in white vinegar. Absolute bliss!
Bombay Sandwich
Nothing beats the Bombay Sandwich. Absolutely nothing! Nowhere else in world can we get this phenomenal combination of yummy white bread smothered in butter and spicy mint chutney with thinly sliced cucumber, potato, tomatoes and what not! The knives the sandwhichwala uses are as sharp as the Japanese ones used for precision chopping by Sushi artists. There are many variations; toasted/plain, aloo bhaji stuffed/cheese etc but I like the simple plain sandwich with no capsicum. I always have this for lunch from a sandwich stall at Nariman Point. I wash it down with fresh sugar cane juice and my meal is complete.
